Morocco surprises the traveller where a vast Atlas mountain range and 2,000 km of coastline dominate the country’s diverse landscape. While the hospitality of Moroccans makes for great travel experiences, their cuisine is hugely popular with couscous, spicy tagines and harira soup the most common.
Go trekking in the High Atlas Mountains and meet the local Berber population, bargain for souvenirs in colourful souks, traverse golden desert dunes on the back of a camel and relax on vast, sandy beaches. The list of things to do is almost endless.
The imperial cities of Fez, Marrakesh, Meknes and Rabat – the latter the current capital – are always popular with travellers, but so are Casablanca, Agadir and Chefchaouen while we favour the historical coastal town of Essaouira where Orson Welles filmed Othello.
Standard Arabic is the official language with Moroccan Arabic the vernacular. Berber is the second official language while French is widely understood and spoken.
