Reiki is a form of holistic healing that has gained popularity for its ability to improve well-being and induce relaxation. It is founded on the concept of universal life energy, which is thought to circulate through all living beings. The term is derived from two Japanese words: “Rei,” which means universal, and “Ki,” which refers to life force energy.
Developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, a Japanese spiritual teacher, it originated after Usui’s significant spiritual awakening on Mount Kurama. He formulated a healing system that channels universal energy to harmonise and revitalise the body, mind, and spirit. From its beginnings, it has gained international recognition and has become a well-regarded complementary therapy.
During a typical Reiki session, the participant remains fully clothed and lies down while a certified practitioner gently places their hands on or just above the body. The aim is to direct energy to where it’s most needed, fostering relaxation and aiding the body’s own healing mechanisms. Reiki sessions are often found to be profoundly soothing, with individuals reporting feelings of warmth or a tingling sensation.
It’s crucial to find a practitioner who is properly trained and credentialed. Entering a session with openness and readiness to embrace its potential benefits can result in a rewarding and beneficial journey. Reiki can serve as an independent therapy or complement other medical treatments, offering a non-invasive and nurturing approach to better health and well-being.
