Switzerland is a chocolate box country with snow clad mountains, and pristine towns and cities. Because of its undoubted beauty, its administrative efficiency and disengagement from global strife, many of the world’s elite have chosen to make it their home.
At just over 1,000 feet above sea level and on the north western edge of Lake Zurich, the city of Zurich is not only blessed with a stunning location, but also has excellent transport facilities by train, road and air. The largest city in Switzerland can be traced back to settlements from 6,400 years ago. German is the official language, but many locals speak a dialect called Zurich Swiss. Try to visit the 12th Century Grossmunster, the 11th Century Fraumunster Church and art museums. Definitely take a boat trip on the lake.
Situated on the shores of Lake Lucerne, the fourth largest lake in Switzerland, for sheer breath-taking elegance Lucerne takes some beating. Visit the 14thCentury Chapel Bridge – the oldest covered bridge in Europe – and the Church of St Leodegar, built in 1633 in the late renaissance style. Wander around the shores of the lake, watch the swans, stop at a café and have coffee and kuchen, a type of plum cake.
There are many luxurious and scenic ski resorts offering a package of accommodation and skiing lessons. Diavolazza and Portes du Soleil are just two of many. If you are not the energetic type and just want to breathe in the pure alpine air with a good book, there is always the apres ski.
